The rhythm I carry on this journey comes from the Haitian Konpa I grew up with. It is the music of my childhood, my memories and part of who I am.
Today, through TimTim.Live, I am taking that rhythm with me on a musical journey around the world — creating songs inspired by countries, cities, towns, villages, people and places I have visited, places I have learned about, and places I still dream of discovering someday.
Gresham is a place I am still learning about, and one I hope to discover someday.
But I want something to be very clear:
I do not come pretending that Konpa is the traditional music of Gresham. This is simply my musical greeting to a place I want to honor.
I am sharing the music I grew up with as a musical greeting from my home to yours.
From Haiti… and now my hometown of Washington, DC, USA… to wherever you call home.
Music does not need a passport.
Music can cross a border long before we do. You do not have to speak the same language. You do not have to come from the same country. You don’t even have to understand every word.
Music asks only one question:
Will you listen?
And if you hear a Haitian Konpa beat carrying the name or memory of a place close to your heart, I hope it makes you smile.
I hope hearing Gresham makes you think about someone you love.
