It contains 14 villages, 13 towns, and 1 city with a combined population of about 917,902. The largest are Culiacán (808,416), Costa Rica (24,874), and El Rosario (14,577). Its nearest neighbours are Lo de Jesús (Campo Romero) (20 km) and Licenciado Benito Juárez (20 km). It was established in 1531.
