It contains 22 villages, 7 towns, and 1 city with a combined population of about 105,899. The largest are Ocosingo (41,878), Nueva Palestina (10,588), and Altamirano (6,672). It lies 21 km south-east of Chiquinival. Its nearest neighbours are Chiquinival (21 km), Santiago Pojcol (23 km), and Morelia (Victórico Rodolfo Grajales) (24 km). It was established in 1915.
