It contains 16 villages and 1 town with a combined population of about 24,288. The largest are Chamula (3,329), Cruztón (1,756), and Yaltem (1,664). Its nearest neighbours are San Antonio del Monte (4.1 km) and Zinacantán (5 km). It was established in 1925.
