History
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, home to more than 250 ethnic groups — the largest being the Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. It gained independence from Britain in 1960.
That diversity is Nigeria's musical engine: from Yoruba talking-drum rhythms to Fela Kuti's genre-defining Afrobeat, Nigerian sound has repeatedly reshaped popular music far beyond its own borders.

Nigeria gave the world Afrobeat, the jazz-funk-highlife fusion Fela Kuti pioneered in the 1960s and 70s, blending jazz, funk, highlife, and Yoruba rhythms.
