From pansori to K-pop
South Korea is an East Asian nation whose music spans centuries — from pansori, the UNESCO-recognized art of epic vocal storytelling, to K-pop, the globally dominant genre that rose to worldwide prominence in the 2000s and 2010s through groups like BTS and BLACKPINK. Seoul, its capital, anchors a culture rebuilt through rapid economic development after the Korean War.

That transformation runs through its music too — from centuries-old traditions like pansori and samulnori to K-pop, which rose to worldwide prominence in the 2000s and 2010s through groups like BTS and BLACKPINK.
Pansori, a traditional epic vocal storytelling art, is recognized by UNESCO. Samulnori, a traditional percussion quartet style, is another pillar of Korean tradition. Alongside them, K-pop became the globally dominant modern pop genre in the 2000s and 2010s.
