Tanbou

The tanbou is a hand drum at the center of Haitian Rara processions and Vodou ceremony. Played bare-handed rather than with sticks, it carries the rhythms that anchor much of Haitian music, from ceremonial drumming to the dance-floor pulse of Konpa.
About the Tanbou
"Tanbou" is the Haitian Creole word for drum. In Haiti it most often refers to a single-headed hand drum, its skin stretched over a wooden or barrel-shaped body, played with the palms and fingers rather than mallets.
During Rara — the processional street music played through Lent — tanbou drive the band alongside bamboo vaksin trumpets and metal graj scrapers, keeping the march moving as it winds through town.
In Vodou ceremony, tanbou rhythms are more than accompaniment: specific patterns are understood as a way of calling and honoring the lwa (spirits), which is why drumming sits at the heart of the ceremony rather than beside it.
That same hand-drum feel carried into Haiti's popular music. Twoubadou and early Konpa grew up alongside the accordion and saxophone, but the tanbou's groove is the thread connecting ceremonial drumming to the music Haitians dance to today.
