History

Colombia's independence, led by Simón Bolívar, was achieved in stages between 1810 and 1819, following centuries of Spanish colonization and the pre-Columbian Indigenous civilizations that came before it.

Its Caribbean coast became a musical crossroads, blending Indigenous, African, and Spanish influences into cumbia and vallenato, while the city of Cali became an internationally known hub for salsa.
