History

Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. The Rastafari movement, a spiritual and cultural force behind much of Jamaica's modern identity, emerged on the island in the 1930s.

Out of that culture came reggae, which grew from ska and rocksteady in the late 1960s and was carried to the world by Bob Marley — followed by dancehall in the 1980s.
