Jamaica

The island that gave the world reggae

Jamaica is a Caribbean island nation whose music changed the world — reggae, born in the late 1960s and carried globally by Bob Marley, grew out of ska and rocksteady and remains one of the most influential sounds on Earth. It is also the birthplace of the Rastafari movement, which emerged there in the 1930s.

History

Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. The Rastafari movement, a spiritual and cultural force behind much of Jamaica's modern identity, emerged on the island in the 1930s.

Out of that culture came reggae, which grew from ska and rocksteady in the late 1960s and was carried to the world by Bob Marley — followed by dancehall in the 1980s.

Music

Reggae emerged in Jamaica in the late 1960s out of ska and rocksteady, and Bob Marley carried it to a global audience. Dancehall, reggae's faster, more electronic successor, followed in the 1980s.

Reggae

Jamaica's signature sound, globally spread by Bob Marley.

Ska

The upbeat 1950s-60s style reggae grew out of.

Rocksteady

The slower, soulful bridge between ska and reggae.

Dancehall

Reggae's faster, 1980s successor.

Traditional instruments

🥁 Nyabinghi drums

Ceremonial hand drums used in Rastafari worship.

🥁 Bass guitar

Central to reggae's foundational "one-drop" rhythm.

Languages

English is the official language. Jamaican Patois, an English-based creole, is the everyday spoken language across the island.
