Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world, home to major pre-Columbian civilizations like the Aztec and Maya before Spanish colonization began in 1521. Its best-known musical export, mariachi, grew out of the state of Jalisco and remains one of the most recognizable sounds on Earth.

History

Mexico was home to major pre-Columbian civilizations, including the Aztec and Maya, before Spanish colonization began in 1521. Independence from Spain was achieved in stages between 1810 and 1821.

Mexico is today the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world, and its culture blends Indigenous, Spanish, and modern influences — nowhere more audibly than in mariachi.

Music

Mariachi, the traditional ensemble style of violins, trumpets, guitars, vihuela, and guitarrón, originated in the state of Jalisco and remains Mexico's most recognizable musical export. Ranchera, an emotional ballad style, grew up alongside it.
