History
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, home to more than 250 ethnic groups — the largest being the Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. It gained independence from Britain in 1960.
That diversity is Nigeria's musical engine: from Yoruba talking-drum rhythms to Fela Kuti's genre-defining Afrobeat, Nigerian sound has repeatedly reshaped popular music far beyond its own borders.
Music
Nigeria gave the world Afrobeat, the jazz-funk-highlife fusion Fela Kuti pioneered in the 1960s and 70s, blending jazz, funk, highlife, and Yoruba rhythms. Its modern pop successor, Afrobeats, has carried artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido to global charts, alongside long-running styles like Highlife and Fuji.
