Origin & history
Jazz took shape in New Orleans around the start of the 20th century, drawing on blues, ragtime and brass-band music.
It spread across the United States and then the world, and it has kept changing, through swing, bebop, cool jazz, free jazz and jazz fusion, each a style still played today.
