발라폰은 박 공명통이 달린 나무 실로폰으로, 카메룬 곳곳에서 연주됩니다. 나무 건반마다 음을 맞춘 호리병박이 아래에 달려 있어 따뜻하고 윙윙거리는 소리가 나요. 이 소리는 음베트, 탐탐 같은 악기와 함께 카메룬 전통 음악에 늘 흐릅니다.

발라폰의 나무 건반은 실로폰처럼 배열되어 있지만, 건반마다 그 음높이에 맞춘 호리병박 공명통이 따로 매달려 있습니다. 채로 건반을 치면 소리가 아래의 박 속에서 울리는데, 박에는 작은 떨림막이 붙어 있는 경우가 많아 이 악기 특유의 찰랑거리는 음색이 납니다.
카메룬에서 발라폰은 음베트(베티족 이야기꾼이 쓰는 하프 치터), 탐탐 북, 엄지 피아노 산자 같은 악기와 함께, 이 나라의 전통 음악을 이어 가는 나무와 박으로 만든 악기 가족에 속합니다.
