Origin & history
Rock and roll appeared in the United States in the late 1940s and 1950s, drawing on rhythm and blues and country music.
In the 1960s it grew into rock music, with bands in both the United States and the United Kingdom shaping it, and it has since split into many styles, from punk to metal to indie rock.
